CONDON Family History
De Canton, De Cauntoun - a Cambro-Norman name Gaelicised to De Canntún, Conndún and Condún, adopted by a Norman-Welsh family, probably from Canton in Glamorgan, Wales. The Gaelic forms were later anglicised to Condon. The Condons settled in the counties of Cork, Limerick and Waterford. The Barony of Condons and Clangibbon in north-east Cork bears their name, the family castle of Cloghleagh being in that area. They developed as a Gaelicised sept, but like many other great Norman families, were proud to be different from their native neighbours. This is reflected in the habit of these families to use non-gaelic first names right up to almost modern times. Thus David Condon described homself in 1605 as 'chief of his sept'.

Gail Wade
I am descended from John Patrick Condon (f. Patrick & m. Margaret Condon who was born in 1814 in Mitchellstown, Co. Cork. John & his wife Catherine Morrissey emigrated to Australia on the Ship, China in 1839. They came to Australia as Assisted Immigrants. Their first child, Patrick Condon (1839-1910) was born on the ship on their way to Australia. They settled in Tamworth, NSW & raised their family of 11 children.

Laura-Marie (Condon) Alle
Laura Marie Condon, My Great, great grandfather came to the United States via ship to New York, his name was James O Condon. It appears the family moved to Wilbarger Texas whereas my grandfather and many where born in Vernon, Texas. I would be extra interested if anyone had information or photos.

Thomas Condon
I am the great grandson of Thomas Condon who came from Kilworth, County Cork to what is now Central Park in NYC. Son of a stonecutter, he traveled West to Oregon to work as a Congregational missionary but became self-taught in Geology and Paleontology and was hired as one of the first Professors at the new Oregon University. He became the Science Department. Thomas Condon: pioneer Paleontologist and Geologist.

Murray
A Mary Murray married a Simon Condon and and are found in the Ballyskibble/Ring area of Cork in late 1890's. Marriage date not known but first child Patrick born 1899. Other children - William, Mary and Michael Condon. We believe Michael came to U.S. mid 1920's and never married. Mystery surrounds another family containing a Mary Murray who they believe married Simon Condon. Need to find a marriage record, church or civil, naming Mary's parents. Any help? She was baptised at Ballymacoda, parents James Murray and Ellen Shanahan.
Thank you. Ruth Murray Lambert

Their problems in later times were compounded by their adherence to the Jacobites; and they suffered in attainders and confiscations accordingly.
In Petty's 1659 Census of Ireland, we find Condon listed as a Principal Irish Name in:
Co Cork: Barrymore Barony with 13 families; the returns for Condon and Clangibbon are missing.
In Co Limerick, Connolough Barony we find Condon (x9). In Co Waterford, Barony of Cosmore and Cosbride there are Condon(x6).
In Co Tipperary (south), Barony of Iffay and Offay there are Condon (x12).
By the time of the mid 19th century Griffith's 'Primary Valuation', Condon households are mostly found in: Cork (221) Limerick (153) Tipperary (145) and Waterford (99).
In the Registrar General's Report on Births in 1890, most Condons were registered in counties Cork, Tipperary and Kerry.
Two famous Condons:
David Condon (another David, see above) accomplished Gaelic poet, temp James II
Edward O' Meagher Condon (1835-1915) was a Fenian; involved in the Manchester Raid in 1867 and condemned to death; this was commuted because of his American citizenship.
